Together with Willaert, Andrea Gabrieli and Merulo, he was one of the leading representatives of 16th- and early 17th-century Venetian music. Giovanni was one of five sons and daughters of Piero di Fais ‘called Gabrieli’, a native of Carnia who resided for some time in the parish of S Geremia, Venice. Little is known of his early years.

In his preface to Giovanni Gabrieli and the Music of the Venetian High Renaissance, Professor Arnold makes clear that we are to regard his book as at once a supplement and a corrective to Winterfeld's pioneering work, and it would indeed be surprising if that portrait. Giovanni Gabrieli, (born ?, Venice [Italy]—died August 12?, , Venice), Italian Renaissance composer, organist, and teacher, celebrated for his sacred music, including massive choral and instrumental motets for the liturgy. Giovanni Gabrieli studied with his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, whom he regarded with almost filial affection. Denis Arnold's comprehensive study of the music of Giovanni Gabrieli (c. ), written in the context of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Venice, covers Gabrieli's life The book considers the whole range of Gabrieli's music as well as that of his contemporaries. Kenton's Life and Works of Giovanni Gabrieli ([Rome], ) and Denis Arnold's Giovanni Gabrieli and the Music of the Venetian High Renaissance (Oxford, ) stand out as significant achievements in the field. Denis Arnold's book and his earlier publications on Gabrieli1 have increased our knowledge of Gabrieli's life and music, the milieu.
